Beyond Pixels: Exploring New Representations and Applications for Motion Analysis

چکیده

The focus of motion analysis has been on estimating a flow vector for every pixel by matching intensities. In my thesis, I will explore motion representations beyond the pixel level and new applications to which these representations lead. I first focus on analyzing motion from video sequences. Traditional motion analysis suffers from the inappropriate modeling of the grouping relationship of pixels and from a lack of ground-truth data. Using layers as the interface for humans to interact with videos, we build a human-assisted motion annotation system to obtain ground-truth motion, missing in the literature, for natural video sequences. Furthermore, we show that with the layer representation, we can detect and magnify small motions to make them visible to human eyes. Then we move to a contour presentation to analyze the motion for textureless objects under occlusion. We demonstrate that simultaneous boundary grouping and motion analysis can solve challenging data, where the traditional pixel-wise motion analysis fails. In the second part of my thesis, I will show the benefits of matching local image structures instead of intensity values. We propose SIFT flow that establishes dense, semantically meaningful correspondence between two images across scenes by matching pixel-wise SIFT features. Using SIFT flow, we develop a new framework for image parsing by transferring the metadata information, such as annotation, motion and depth, from the images in a large database to an unknown query image. We demonstrate this framework using new applications such as predicting motion from a single image and motion synthesis via object transfer. Based on SIFT flow, we introduce a nonparametric scene parsing system using label transfer, with very promising experimental results suggesting that our system outperforms state-of-the-art techniques based

Pseudo Zernike Moment-based Multi-frame Super Resolution

The goal of multi-frame Super Resolution (SR) is to fuse multiple Low Resolution (LR) images to produce one High Resolution (HR) image. The major challenge of classic SR approaches is accurate motion estimation between the frames. To handle this challenge, fuzzy motion estimation method has been proposed that replaces value of each pixel using the weighted averaging all its neighboring pixels i...

Mobile Robot Online Motion Planning Using Generalized Voronoi Graphs

In this paper, a new online robot motion planner is developed for systematically exploring unknown environ¬ments by intelligent mobile robots in real-time applications. The algorithm takes advantage of sensory data to find an obstacle-free start-to-goal path. It does so by online calculation of the Generalized Voronoi Graph (GVG) of the free space, and utilizing a combination of depth-first an...

An Improved Motion Vector Estimation Approach for Video Error Concealment Based on the Video Scene Analysis

In order to enhance the accuracy of the motion vector (MV) estimation and also reduce the error propagation issue during the estimation, in this paper, a new adaptive error concealment (EC) approach is proposed based on the information extracted from the video scene. In this regard, the motion information of the video scene around the degraded MB is first analyzed to estimate the motion type of...

Orientalism Beyond Belief: Critiquing the Problematics of V. S. Naipaul’s Islamic Excursion

This study aims to offer a critical analysis of V. S. Naipaul’s second Islamic travelogue Beyond Belief: Islamic Excursions Among the Converted Peoples (1998), which chronicles the author’s excursions to the 4 non-Arab Muslim countries of Indonesia, Iran, Pakistan, and Malaysia. This critique is presented, firstly, through problematizing the author’s theorization on the theme of Muslim conversi...
